A farmer from the southern part of Lambton County has been honoured as Outstanding Farmer of the Year by the Lambton Soil and Crop Improvement Association.
Allan Butler, a third-generation farmer, was given the honour at the association’s annual meeting in Alvinston.
Butler, who has been farming for approximately 40 years, was cited for his work within Lambton’s agricultural community. He’s worked as a crop insurance adjustor, as well as a supervisor for Lambton County Feeder Finance.
Butler also taught pesticide courses for 20 years, and from 2005 to 2013 managed Lambton County’s environmental farm plan. The provincially-promoted farm plans were established in the years immediately following the Walkerton water crisis in 2000.
“He’s been very active, probably for the last 25, 30 years in Lambton County with growers and helping educate growers,” said association president Kirk Van Wall said of Butler.
Butler grows corn, soybeans and wheat. Up until about 10 years ago, he raised cattle.
He praised the farm community for their continue support.
“Just the fact that I’ve been able to work for the farmers in Lambton,” Butler said. “I’ve learned a great deal just from the folks in the room.”
Butler accepted the award alongside his wife Kathy.
