Sarnia, ON – The Sarnia-Lambton Economic Partnership (SLEP) is pleased to announce the participants of this year’s Starter Company Plus program. This initiative, delivered through the Small Business Enterprise Centre of Sarnia-Lambton, and funded by the Province of Ontario’s Ministry of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade, continues to support the growth and success of small businesses across the region, providing grant funding, professional development, and training to area entrepreneurs and their small businesses.

Twelve small businesses have been selected to participate in this year’s Starter Company Plus program, supporting entrepreneurship, economic diversity, and job creation in the Sarnia-Lambton area. This year’s Starter Company Plus program provides access to a combined $56,000 in grant funding to help start and grow small businesses across the County.

“Small businesses make up the vast majority of business operations across Sarnia-Lambton and represent a great opportunity for growth. Often, small supports can provide a big impact in making an idea a reality. Through programs such as the Starter Company Plus, the Small Business Enterprise Centre of Sarnia-Lambton provides early-stage support to entrepreneurs who are in the early stages of executing the starting of a new small business and those who are growing an existing one,” said Sarnia-Lambton Economic Partnership CEO, Matthew Slotwinski.

With an overwhelming number of businesses participating in the Starter Company Plus application process, the review committee undertook the challenging task of selecting the final participants. Of the 12 successful applicants, most are less than a year old and 3 are busily preparing to open their doors in the coming months.

“Entrepreneurship is rarely straightforward and demands a lot of patience, resourcefulness, and resilience,” said Alison Minato, Small Business Enterprise Centre Manager. “We had a high volume of excellent applications this year and encourage the other businesses who applied to continue working with the Small Business Enterprise Centre and to take advantage of the programming we have coming up this fall. We are offering the Summer Company and Starter Company Plus grant programs again next year and we’re here to help with business planning and applications all year round.”

Previous program participants have highlighted the importance of networking and grant funding in navigating the challenges of starting and growing a business. “The Starter Company Plus Program was a great help in providing a kickstart for our business and connecting us with so many other business owners who were in the same stage as we were with our business. Many of these connections remain today and have become good friends,” said Sandra and Jamie Galloway, owners of Blue Coast Bitters. “The monthly meetings and networking were a great benefit to us. We met so many influential business owners that provided advice and mentorship that we needed to help propel us to where we are now.”

“We are excited to see the future success of these 12 businesses. The program’s goal in bringing these businesses together is to foster a collaborative environment where they can share knowledge and leverage the support of local professionals. The Starter Company Plus program helps entrepreneurs to grow their businesses and has a continued positive economic impact on the community,” said Slotwinski.

All Starter Company Plus applicants receive access to the Sarnia-Lambton Economic Partnership’s Small Business Enterprise Centre services. The free service offerings include workshops, seminars, and one-on-one business consultation services to help aspiring, new, and existing entrepreneurs address individual questions or concerns, define their business ideas, and create their business plans. These services are available to all residents of Sarnia-Lambton, regardless of participation in the Starter Company Plus program.

The Sarnia-Lambton Economic Partnership and the Small Business Enterprise Centre would like to thank volunteers from Community Futures Lambton, TechAlliance, and Your Initiative Co. for the time, care, and expertise they contributed to the review of this year’s Starter Company Plus applications.
